Formulaic Magic is the combined use of standardized gestures and words that will almost always bring about the same effect. When a magus knows a spell, he basically knows exactly what words to speak and exactly how to gesture in just the right way to bring about the desired effect. Formulaic Magic is generally very rigid and the gestures and words must be combined just right for the magic to work. In most cases, achieving a different effect from the standard or known spell requires using Spontaneous Magic.
