Germany is a name derived from the Latin Germania, the Roman name for the lands beyond the Rhine river. It was adopted by Julius Caesar after a Gallic tern for the peoples east of the Rhine. In the Hermetic Era the term refers collectively to a number of states and nations sharing a cultural affiliation and a common language (more precisely, a group of closely related languages and dialects,) many - but not all - under the banner of the Holy Roman Empire.
