The traditional beginning of the Kings of Denmark begins with the rise of Gorm the Old in the early 10th century, from whom later rulers would trace their descent. However, much of the Jutland peninsula became unified under a single ruler as early as the 8th Century.

Many of the Danish Kings at various times claimed Kingships elsewhere; in Sweden and Norway, for a brief time in England, and variously other lesser Kingships. These have been noted in the list below.

  • Gorm the Old 917 - 958.
  • Harald Bluetooth 958 - 986, King also of Norway for a brief time.
  • Sweyn Forkbeard 986 - 1014, also King of England from 1013 and has as vassal the King of Norway from 986 - 995, and claimed Norway outright from 1000 until his death.
  • Harald II 1014 - 1018
  • Canute the Great 1018 - 1035, King also of England from 1016 and Norway from 1028.
  • Harthacanute 1035 - 1042, King also of England from 1040.
  • Magnus the Good 1042 - 1047, also King of Norway from 1035.
  • Sveinn Estridsen 1047 - 1074.
  • Harald Hen 1074 - 1080.
  • Canute IV 1080 - 1086.
  • Olaf I 1086 - 1095.
  • Eric I the Good 1095 - 1103.
  • Niels 1104 - 1134.
  • Eric II 1134 - 1137.
  • Eric III 1137 - 1146
  • Sweyn III 1146 - 1157, a pretender.
  • Canute V 1146 - 1157, a pretender.
  • Valdemar I the Great 1146 - 1182, who reunified Denmark after long civil war.
  • Canute VI 1182 - 1202.
  • Valdemar II the Victorious 1202 - 1241.
  • Eric IV 1241 - 1250.
  • Abel 1250 - 1252.
  • Christopher I 1252 - 1259.
  • Eric V 1259 - 1286.
  • Eric VI 1286 - 1319.
  • Christopher II 1320 - 1326.
  • Valdemar III 1326 - 1329.
  • Christopher II, Restored, 1329 - 1332.
  • An Interregnum from 1332 - 1340.
  • Valdemar IV 1340 - 1375
  • Olaf II 1375 - 1387, also King of Norway from 1380 - 1387, and a pretender to the throne of Sweden from 1385.
  • Margaret I 1387 - 1397, she was Queen Regnant of Denmark, Norway and Sweden until 1397, and wielded great power until her death in 1412.
  • Eric VII of Pomerania 1397 - 1439, also King of Norway and Sweden.
  • Christopher III of Bavaria 1440 - 1448, also King of Norway and Sweden.
  • Christian I 1448 - 1481, also King of Norway and Sweden.
